October Full Moon: The Power To Choose

Study of a Nude Man (The Strong Man)

Study of a Nude Man (The Strong Man) painting by Thomas Eakins (Museum: Philadelphia Museum of Art)

At the seed moment of the current lunar cycle (the new Moon), Mars, the red planet, was in a tight conjunction with the Sun & Moon in Libra. I wrote a post- The Rebirth of the Sacred Masculine.

Today with Mars at 23° Libra conjunct the Sun at 27° Libra, the masculine remains in the spotlight.

The new Moon on 6 October heralded the first Moon, Myth, & Magic women’s circle in Edinburgh, an adaptation of the Moon Lodge previously hosted in Canterbury. Now home in Scotland I am delighted to continue in this work.

The theme of the first circle was focused on the masculine, a curious choice for the start of a women’s circle. While much of the Moon Lodge has been rooted in the feminine, I had the dawning realisation that in order to facilitate an embodied enquiry into the feminine, a strong masculine container was needed. In the Moon Lodge, the circle itself as well as ritual creates structure, however strengthening our own masculine holding was the invitation.

As these things go, the timing was perfect- I am journeying through the Chiron return which for me is inextricably linked with Mars- I have a tight Chiron Mars conjunction- in other words I have a wounded masculine which means my own holding container has been weak. The journey into my personal masculine wound has been both challenging and enlightening and has also offered insights into the collective masculine wound.

One insight is the realisation that the power “to choose” is an inherently masculine condition (I am talking archetypally here, not saying that women cannot choose). The feminine principle is naturally more yielding and receptive and, with a desire to include, may be over accommodating or lack discernment (excepting the virgin/Virgo archetype).

It occurred to me that one of the reasons we do shadow work is to learn how to choose rather than be compelled by forces outwith our control. Driven by unconscious forces, we act out of motivations that can possess us- I am thinking of addiction or any behaviour that we cannot stop even while knowing it damages ourselves or others.

As our consciousness increases, we become aware that we are in fact choosing everything in our lives (I realise this statement deserves more investigation than a short post can offer). Upon becoming aware that we are creating the dynamics of our lives we discover that there are things which although we know are detrimental and even destructive to our wellbeing, we are nevertheless drawn to them like months to a flame… these are our dark desires and sabotaging behaviours.

I am not saying dark desires are bad however if we are at the mercy of them or are unable to prevent ourselves from acting them out we are under a spell.

Learning to choose consciously sets us free.

For today’s full Moon, the position of the Sun- the masculine – is at 27°Libra – the Sabian symbol is:

“Every individualized organism is part of a larger organized whole, whether or not it is aware of this or of the sustaining power of the whole. A man, however, can deliberately choose to follow the dark path of ego-isolation which sooner or later always leads to destruction and self-loss in “matter.” At the animal level, the whole biosphere is the community; for the ordinary human being, it is the tribe or family, the village community, the nation. As the individual expands his consciousness, he may become aware of a spiritual community, even beyond the “noosphere” (the one Mind of humanity), i.e. the realm of the pure light of the “Supermind,” which is what the concept of the “White Lodge” suggests.”

On the opposite polarity is the “Black Lodge,” seductive and compelling though the danger is that somewhere along the line we lose our soul.

A strong masculine chooses, makes decisions, and has the focus and discipline to execute those decisions- to commit to a plan of action and see it through.

Reinstating a strong masculine is necessary in both men and women- in women we can get a sense of the condition of our inner man (our animus) through our significant relationships with men. For everybody, a good place to begin reviewing our relationship with the masculine is to reflect on the masculine blueprint that was installed during our formative experiences, and also in our ancestral field.

With the light of the full moon consider if you can identify something that has a hold over you- something you have up until now seemingly been unable to control- and see if you can break the spell… that is of course if you want to.

Saturn & The New World Order.

Today Saturn stations direct at 6° Aquarius after a several month period of retrograde motion.

Saturn’s direct motion follows on from Pluto stationing direct on October 6th, and a few days before Jupiter and Mercury go direct on October 18th.

That’s a lot of forward motion!

So where are we going?

As always that has a lot do with us; far from being swept along in the collective tides, Saturn compels us to review the choices we are making and asks some challenging question about self-responsibility, and legitimate authority.

The Sabian Symbol for Saturn’s station direct degree is:

A CHILD IS SEEN BEING BORN OUT OF AN EGG.

The ancient symbolism of the Cosmic Egg (Hiranyagharba in Sanskrit) out of which a new universe is born can be interpreted at several levels. Here we see the appearance of a new type of human being […] one who is free from the inertia of mankind’s past. He constitutes a fresh projection of the creative Spirit that emanates from the cosmic or planetary Whole, and not from any local culture and racial tradition.

It can be said to announce the EMERGENCE OF GLOBAL MAN for the New Age. The power of the whole is focused within him in perfect freedom from ancient standards of value based on local conditions.

Saturn in Aquarius is concerned with the collective, and also with technology- could this be more timely in light of Frances Haugen’s recent expose of Facebook’s lack of social responsibility in the interest of capital gains? But is she a plant? Certainly that theory has entered the hall of information smoke and mirrors. Haugen who became passionate in her pursuit to expose Facebook after she “lost a friend to conspiracy theories,” certainly has all the hallmarks of a media personality who appears to have undergone a radical transformation in her appearance of late. Of course that in itself is not a sign of anything, in fact when it comes to the verifiability of information processed through our current media channels, nothing is as it seems…and Saturn won’t stand for it.

Saturn seeks truth and asks for accountability.

Saturn in Aquarius is concerned with structure within the collective spheres; technology is an obvious tool of choice in the creation of those structures. How that tool is used or abused is the immediate and living issue we are being asked to confront.

Saturn has what it takes to create either a prison to enclose the collective mind, or the integrity to offer the possibility of freedom from that prison through alternative (though solid) structures… and if that includes the stepping up of personal accountability, all the better.

Saturn asks us to choose, and to choose wisely, he is not impressed with alarmist tactics that demand lightning-fast decisions or knee jerk reactions- when Saturn hears the much-used phrase “we are running out of time,” I expect he raises a sardonic eyebrow and asks, whose time, exactly?

Immediacy to secure control before too many people question an increasingly dubious authority is a pressing weight… can’t you just feel the collective nervous system going into sympathetic overdrive?

Tracking women as matter of safety is just one of the proposals that falls within the “now let’s just take a minute to consider this” category. We have already allowed too many extreme, if not illegal, measures to be made on behalf of “the greater good,”… used often as a tactic in service to the shadow side of Aquarius. An alarming example of this is convincing children- who have virtually no chance of dying from “C”- to assume social responsibility for the rest of society.

The message in my New Moon blog was clear and I feel worth repeating:

“Be very careful about what you are prepared to trade for the illusion of safety”.

“An emergence of global man for a new age,” says the symbol for Saturn’s change of direction.

That global man could be a mind controlled, fearful pawn who has assigned power to the architects of a new world order, or it could be a global man who having taken responsibility for the freedom of himself, his family, and community (of the human and non-human world), consciously chooses “a “new ordered world” creating structures that are conducive to organic and soulful living, liberated from tyranny and manipulation.

The well-oiled propaganda machine, having now become like some Frankenstein’s monster of the collective psyche, is running itself requiring only the power we give it. Every time we are activated by the next red herring or timely trauma trigger, we feed the beast.

If we trust our own Saturn, the wise father within who is unphased by coercive ploys, we might learn to free ourselves from Big Brother tech allowing ourselves to be guided by something more organic than an algorithm.

On the other hand when the power of Saturn is drafted for nefarious purposes, and we allow those structures to be implemented, the consequences may not be easily undone. Saturn, as with all of the planets has a higher and lower polarity depending on the consciousness that engages with it.

When a story “breaks,” instead of panicking we could consider the underlying motivations hidden beneath the first few layers of rhetoric-from both MSM and other sources- before allowing them to form another crust around the prison of our consensual reality.

Whatever we are choosing now will be amplified and strengthened by Jupiter’s direct motion in a week’s time. All this direct motion can be considered a seed moment; it doesn’t all have to be worked out immediately, however at the beginning of this next chapter we can start as we mean to go on by consciously choosing.

Pluto is highlighting issues of power and how we choose to exercise that power either by factoring it out or owning it. This may require a deeper look at our personal trauma to uncover the ways in which we are susceptible to manipulation. As the symbol says, there is at this time an opportunity to be “free from the inertia of mankind’s (our) past.”

We are in the process of creating a fresh perspective of the creative Spirit- there are many possibilities once we free ourselves from past conditioning.

The Warrior, The King, & The Lover.

On the full moon on 28th March at 19.48 GMT, the Sun will be at 8 degrees of Aries conjunct Chiron and Venus also at 8 degrees of Aries.

The Sabian Symbols are a set of 360 phrases and interpretations written by Marc Edmund Jones in 1953 that correspond with each of the 360 degrees of the wheel of the zodiac. Words and images convey the inner meaning of each degree making the Sabian symbols a creative resource when working with astrology.

The symbol for 9 Aries  (round up to the next degree) is-

PHASE 9 (ARIES 9°): A CRYSTAL GAZER.

KEYNOTE: The development of an inner realization of organic wholeness.

When the Sun is in Mars ruled Aries, the Warrior archetype is active. In archetypal psychology the Sun is the Self around which the other planets orbit (other parts of the psyche). The duty of the Warrior is to protect the Self; by nature the Sun/King is generative, fertilizing, and benevolent. The wisdom of the good King resides in the heart and is fully connected to the mind and mental faculties.

In many fairy tales and myths such as the Grail legends, the story begins with a sick, wounded, or lame King- a symbol that the Self as organising principle is not functioning properly indicating that other aspects of the psyche are in control. The Wasteland is a symptom of the wounded King, the land is devastated, laid bare, nothing grows… if the King is wounded all are wounded.

The image of King Arthur and his 12 Knights of the Round Table is a beautiful mandala symbol of the the psyche’s wholeness where Knights/Warriors are operating in full concordance with a central unifying and fertilizing principle- the King. Each of the Knights in his way must endure trials, tests, and challenges to be brought to the level of excellence required to serve the Crown. In reality this is the long tender, often painful process of refining the personality and overcoming the demons of ego.

When the ego runs amuck and assumes superiority over the Self there is sickness and imbalance. A sign of this is seen in a lack of generative energy, vitality, and creativity. Poverty, inertia, and over rigidified control are just some of the signs of a wounded King. When this happens, dysregulated aspects need to be slayed (with compassion) to allow the true harmony of the Self to flourish. The King himself must also to be periodically sacrificed to make way for a new King- we see this in the Celtic ritual of the Holly King and the Oak King, or in the myth of the Corn King- in the natural world this reflects the cycles of life, death, and renewal.

The shadow King is the tyrant or weak King; Warriors working on his behalf are ego aspects that have taken over the true Self or essence. Inflation is another downfall of the shadow King, for the good King works for the benefit of all and not only for himself.

If a culture is not thriving and the people are sick, this is a sign that the central organising principle-the King is also sick.

The King archetype exists in women as well as men, in both it is a generative energy with the capacity to protect what one knows to be true; fertilizing the new and ensuring harmony among the people, which can be read as coherence between body-mind-spirit. The journey to Kinghood for men and women, which is another way of describing maturity or individuation is a tough call and usually does not happen without sacrifice.

Chiron on the same degree of the Sun offers the possibility of healing fragmentation restoring the Self… who are those renegade parts of ourselves operating from the shadow or wounded King and what needs to happen in order for them to be brought back to the round table?

The answer may simply be to ask what ails them, or whom they serve.

Presiding over the coronation this full moon is the Goddess Venus, magnetising to her all that is needed to set the house in order and create a heart centred space. Like the ever-benevolent Queen in true harmony with the good will of the King, Venus bestows forgiveness, pleasure, joy and offers inspired ways of bringing together that which has split apart, with kindness and forgiveness.

In this scenario the King, Queen, and Warrior are all on board with the life-giving principle of Eros.

Questions to consider this full moon:

How aware are we of our inner organising principle, is all of us on board with our goals and dreams and are they born of our Kingly Self, or are renegade Warriors running the show and protecting the ego?

Do we have our Kingdom in order- how organised are we. Are we able to put conditions in place to successfully achieve our goals?

Is our speech and conduct in alignment with the vision of our higher self. Are we impeccable with our word?

What parts of ourselves do we need to bring home across the bridge of Chiron and into the arms of Venus?
