And so, we are preparing to set sail on an alchemical journey through the passage of female mid-life. Last night I delivered a talk illustrating the basic concepts of alchemy, showing how I view the experience of perimenopause and menopause as an alchemical process.
At the threshold of the transition there is often a descent as the identity we have constructed (or that has partly been constructed for us) gives way to a more mature, authentic version. A dismantling of identity structures that have until now contained us in life may initiate a necessary review as we are fixed by Ereshkigal’s steely eye of death. What comes back from the underworld and what does not. What remains in the ashes and what becomes the phoenix.
As things of the external world peel away like a serpent’s skin, the call is to turn inward, to listen to the still, small, and maybe sad voice within. This phase (akin to the Nigredo) might involve seeking and finding the lost child, facing the shadow, or releasing redundant hopes and dreams that we previously clung to as part of our identity. As the ground beneath our feet gives way it can feel as if we are being hurled into Hades, uncertain of how or if we will return. Is it an abduction or is it a conscious descent. Do we get to choose?
Sounds a little dramatic, doesn’t it? But for some this is the reality of menopause. The intention of “The Alchemy of Menopause” course and workshops is to explore the purpose of this profound transition beyond mere biology. What if, instead of menopause being an unpleasant transition to get through as quickly as possible, while holding on to as much of our former self as possible, it is an alchemical process in which we are being reduced to our core to be reshaped into a fuller, more authentic self.
Do you feel the call?
