Aries New Moon: The Gods of Love.

‘Psyche Entering Cupid’s Garden’ by John William Waterhouse

April’s new moon on the 12th heralds powerful new beginnings inaugurated by the messengers of spring and bathed in the amniotic sap of rebirth. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac;  the first moon in Aries marks not only a new lunar cycle but a whole new annual cycle. This Aries new moon is particularly strong as a host of other elements accompany and reinforce the luminaries.

Sun & Moon are at Aries 22°- Mercury at Aries 14°- Venus at Aries 26°- Chiron at Aries 9°- asteroid Amor at Aries 11°.

That’s a lot of cardinal fire, a burst of cosmic energy penetrating even the densest matter. It’s the kind of signature that can set the world on fire; it is sheer warrior (of love) energy, and the question presented to us at the threshold is-

What will we pull through the birthing canal. What precious things shall we lovingly tend and hold dear until they take root creating a strong foundation for the coming year and beyond?

The Sabian Symbol for the new moon is-

PHASE 23 (ARIES 23°): A PREGNANT WOMAN IN LIGHT SUMMER DRESS.

KEYNOTE: Fecundity.

Masculine aggressiveness and the woman’s desire for fulfilment (Phases 21 and 22) are integrated and realized in the expected child. This three-fold sequence can be seen operating at several levels, and the third term, the child, can take various emotional and cultural forms. The basic meaning remains the same. Summer is the period of fruition. Man – at the receptive “woman” level – reaps the fruits of his dynamic activity.

This is the third stage of the fifth five-fold sequence of cyclic phases. It combines the two preceding ones and suggests INNER FULFILLMENT.

Also in Aries is asteroid Amor at Aries 11°- asteroid Cupid (which is the same as Amor) has just ingressed over in to Taurus 1°. The Greek counterpart of Amor and Cupid is Eros, at Capricorn 7 ° forming a trine with Uranus, god of liberation and change at Taurus 9°.

The Gods of Love are asking us to reconsider our ideas and beliefs about love. What blocks us from expressing and receiving love, and ultimately are we ready for a higher love. Are we ready to enter the garden of Cupid?

Asteroid Amor is conjunct Chiron by 2 degrees facilitating greater awareness of our personal and collective wounds of love, highlighting the hurt places that cause us to contract and cut ourselves off from universal love.

As the Sufi mystic, Rumi says,

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”

Even though the barriers to love at this time appear impenetrable, it is another great soul, Mahatma Gandhi who reminds us of an “indefinable mysterious Power that pervades everything”. Of this power Gandhi  says,

And is this Power benevolent or malevolent? I see it as purely benevolent. For I can see, that in the midst of death life persists, in the midst of untruth truth persists, in the midst of darkness light persists. Hence, I gather that God is Life, Truth, Light. He is Love. He is the Supreme Good.”

Though it may seem that we are in the midst of darkness and death, many of us sense a deep stirring in our being calling us to rise beyond the oppression of the soul in captivity and reclaim liberation from the purveyors of doom and life stealing schemes.  In the midst of death life persists and nowhere is this urge to life more tenaciously reflected than an Aries new moon where the impulse to life pushes through even the most barren ground and hardened hearts.

We stand on the polarity point between Eros, god of life and Thanatos, god of death, and like many before us on the quest for sovereignty we must discern what is ready to die and what is ready to be born. Father of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud believed Eros and Thanatos are two states locked in a perpetual battle within the human psyche. It is Eros’ consort Psyche who finally sets us free through the depth of her love, commitment, and devotion in the face of adversity. Psyche chooses love at every turn and in pursuit of her beloved enters the Garden of Cupid.

The polarity between Eros and Thanatos is not a duality of good versus evil, it is more like a continuum of reflection, tension, balance, and rebalance. Without Thanatos, Eros would have nothing to stive toward, nothing to push against, becoming complacent, apathetic, and dull. Without Eros, Thanatos would have nothing to destroy as everything would already be in a state of decay and undoing and before long there would be nothing left -a perpetual wasteland… some may argue that we are currently living in the wasteland. The King is sick, the land is sick, and the people are sick; the vice like grip of Thanatos has held reign for too long culminating in a petrified state of unbalance and near stasis. Fear and aggression are expressions of Thanatos, both break down and reduce rather than open and release. It is love that liberates the soul.

We need Eros’ reviving kiss this new moon as never before; the strong Aries energies are a mighty band of warriors ready to defend life. The pregnant woman in a light summers dress, the fecundity of spring, the bursting array of life in the plant and animal kingdoms are at their strongest. That same principle is in us… can you feel the sap rising, the juices flowing? The west wind is blowing away the dead wood, the Zephyr is fructifying all living things- the messengers of spring have spoken.

In mythology, Psyche is a beautiful mortal woman who falls in love with Eros, and he with her even though their love seems impossible, prevented by a spiritual law that states mortals and gods cannot love equally. Each night Psyche is visited by Eros who makes intense love to her bringing her to the height of ecstatic bliss; their union is consummated in the dark so that Psyche is not aware of her lover’s godly status and in her ignorance their partnership is for a few hours equal. Though she can feel Eros, Psyche never sets eyes on him, however once she becomes pregnant her curiosity gets the better of her and one night she hold a candle over her love to gaze upon him… an act that is strictly forbidden. It is not a horrendous monster before her as she has been told but a breathtakingly beautiful man who upon awakening is accidentally burned from the hot wax of her candle. He tells Psyche, “the one thing I asked you never to do you have done, and because of this I must now leave you”. And off he flies.

Heartbroken Psyche is set a series of seemingly impossible tasks by the goddess of love Aphrodite including making a descent to Hades to request a drop of beauty balm from Proserpina. Although the tasks set to Psyche seem unobtainable, through help from the gods, tenacity, and an unshakable love for Eros, Psyche completes her mission. As she goes at last to set her final prize before the goddess Aphrodite, she is tempted to steal a drop of beauty balm and opens the little box given to her by the goddess of the underworld. Instead of beauty it is “infernal and Stygian sleep,” that is released causing Psyche to fall into a deep state of unconsciousness… the god of death, Thanatos lurks close by in a hazy fog waiting to claim her soul.

Catching wind of his love in danger, Eros now healed and deeply moved by Psyche’s devotion comes to her aid and revives her with his kiss. The lovers win the blessing of the gods and Psyche is admitted into Olympus- a rare honour, and in fact maybe the only mortal to be made divine. Psyche became the Greek goddess of the soul; she and Eros gave birth to a daughter, named Voluptas or Hedone, meaning bliss or pleasure.

‘Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss’ by Antonio Canova, in the Louvre.

With the warrior planet Mars at her side this new moon Psyche’s commitment and devotion is stronger than ever. Mars (Gemini 23°) conjunct Psyche (Gemini 25°) is the Warrior of Love reborn with the aid of a powerhouse of gods at the astrological point of rebirth and renewal. And in Gemini the relationship between mind, our thought processes, and psyche or soul is highlighted. What messeges are we sending into the world as this will influence how the world reacts and interacts with us. As James Hillman says, it is not so much that we have a psyche, it is more that we are in psyche. Everything is in psyche and the Aries new moon is the kiss of Eros that we need to revive us.

The Dark Dance

MK Ultra Image

In 2017 Scottish born Choreographer Rosie Kay produced a dance piece called MK Ultra– which has been described as a “thoroughly researched exploration of the rise of the Illuminati conspiracy in modern culture with filmmaker Adam Curtis’ documentary elements to create a new kind of dance work.”

Although the piece was on tour four years ago, the subject matter seemed to pre-empt an explosion in conspiracy theories about to come out of the closet and divide an entire populace. In case you are not aware, MK Ultra was a secret CIA operation developed to carry out mind control and behavioural modification experiments on an unsuspecting American Public from the early 1950’s to the early 1970’s. Much of the information has now been declassified and can be easily found through a simple search on Wiki… although most of the documents were destroyed in 1975. While the experiments apparently stopped in the early 70’s many people believe the project and others like it continue in ever more sophisticated forms and is particularly prevalent within the pop industry…hyper sexualisation being one of the chief features.

MK Ultra the show toured all the big theatres in the UK, receiving rave reviews in mainstream publications such as the Guardian and The Evening Standard. High school kids at GCSE level were interviewed about their thoughts on MK Ultra and some of the comments were used in the production… teenagers were encouraged to see the show. What I find interesting is that while most of the population were unaware of MK Ultra, the show easily entered mainstream performance & Art. When asked, many of the audience said they didn’t know if there was any truth to the story but had enjoyed a vibrant and dynamic performance, nonetheless. Ms Kay said she had taken her research ‘with a pinch of salt’.

The intention of this post is not to debate the truth or untruth of a continuing MK Ultra, but to consider the cultural phenomenon of a society divided between a growing number of people known as ‘truthers’, and those who refuse to tolerate what they consider to be ridiculous, crazy nonsense. There’s not much middle ground here it would seem, and this is reflected in the disparity between only a small section of society even knowing about MK Ultra and the show becoming a box office hit. I think that’s quite odd.

Whether MK ultra continues to brainwash society, or the experiments did indeed stop 50 years ago, I am in no position to say but from a psycho-spiritual perspective a deep strata in the human psyche has been awakened and is now alive in our consciousness.

There is much I could say about this… I’ve been looking into MK Ultra and other ‘black ops’ as part of my Chiron in Aries in research. But more personally, in 2012 I came within the orbit of these so-called conspiracy theories in a very real way when I was asked to help a woman who was ‘waking up’ from her programming. Through getting to know her and her husband I was ‘educated’ in the details of the operation; I met other women claiming the same thing. It blew my mind. The events and experiences of that time took me down a deep rabbit hole… I got lost in the mystery for years. I found no resolve, resolution, or answers to explain the experiences of these women and consequently my own experiences. Instead I was led on an incredible journey into a mysterious realm where things were not as they seemed and reality was not, as typically presented, a single thread but a multi-dimensional tapestry.

Perhaps these anomalous phenomenon have always existed, manifest in the Gnostic Archons, the Jinn of Islamic theology, or UFO’s, crop circles and alien implants- I am thinking here about the books written by Whitley Strieber and his remarkable account of alien communion. American college professor Jeff Kripal takes this on in his book with Strieber- The Super Natural: A New Vision of the Unexplained.  But the paranormal, black ops, and the supernatural are still relatively unexplored territory. I am guessing the reasons for this are 1. Because it’s so vast; 2. It is met with ridicule and not taken seriously… and people don’t want to be labelled crazy; 3. It is so hidden; 4. Our culture insists on the scientifically proven;  5. The unknown has always been feared with the gap liable to be filled with fantastic images from the human unconscious; 6. There is a very real danger of getting lost/going mad in the uncontained and endless space.

But we are curious. Is it not compelling to hear accounts of people who have crossed over to the other side, sailed even for a moment on the great abyss and lived to tell the tale?

One day I will write about my own experiences- I know they changed me. I am grateful for developing a symbolic and shamanic perspective, it has allowed me to journey with this material much more deeply and richly that I might have done if I had chosen one side of the fence or the other. I came to realise that things can be both real and not real, that there can be a difference between what is real and what is based in reality… reality being consensual.

It is in the fertile middle ground of the imaginal that I have most benefitted from this anomalous and frankly intense experience. The MA in Myth, Cosmology and the Sacred programme at Canterbury Christ Church university was hugely beneficial to this regard; these subjects were not shied away from and in fact a whole module was dedicated to the exploration of such phenomenon. I know some people might disagree but for me the way to approach this strange territory is with a symbolic perspective; literalism and overly rational left-brain thinking doesn’t seem to take one very far. Neither it seems does fear where we can become paralysed or easily triggered.

Still, Rosie Kay just went right in there and made a dance piece which I think was a bold move. Then again, maybe she was somewhat protected by her scepticism… or perhaps she wasn’t so sceptical afterall.

Here is a clip of the show-

Hygeia: Reclaim Your Body

Hygeia by Peter Paul Rubens

Yesterday as the moon reached her peak, asteroid Hygeia merged with Luna in a tight conjunction at 9 ° Leo.

Hygeia, goddess of health is involved with maintaining good health through right living and connection to nature. Daughter of Asclepius, god of medicine, whose father and mother are Apollo and Coronis, Hygeia comes from a long line of healers associated with the serpent mysteries of renewal.

Robert Graves suggests that Coronis’ mythology represents the suppression of medical practice by women and its transference into the hands of the patriarchy which I feel is worthy of consideration in light of ongoing medical dispute.

Where, we might ask, is the voice of the wise woman in this wrangle?

Yesterday I had a conversation with my father who shared with me his experience of visiting his doctor who suggested that he start taking vitamin B12 supplement. My father informed her that he was already taking B12 and had been for some time. This apparently surprised her, and she wanted to know what had caused my father to do that.

My father’s exchange remined me of my own experience last year- I don’t often visit doctors but after a self-examination, I noticed something potentially concerning and decided to get it checked out. The female doctor asked me how I had come to know about the issue, and I told her I’d discovered it through self-examination. She was surprised… and almost cross; she demanded to know why I had carried out a self-examination as if I had no right to intimate access of my own body.

In that moment I collided with the shadow of entitlement at the core of allopathic medicine. The belief that we are ignorant to the workings, needs and spirit of our bodies is conditioned into us from early childhood, and before that in the womb where for the most part our mothers succumbed to often detrimental birthing practices.

It is this shadow of entitled authority that expects people to comply without question with procedures such as mass vaccination. These expectations are reinforced by government and other authorities who strongly advise consent. Whether the strong advice turns into enforced obligation is a very real question of our time.

In the myth of Coronis, when Coronis is pregnant she falls in love with a mortal man which enrages Apollo who ends up killing both her and her lover. As she lay burning on her funeral pyre, Apollo performs the first caesarean section by cutting baby Asclepius from her womb thus saving him from certain death. For Graves, the death of Coronis heralds a point when wisdom originally carried by the wise woman now passed only from father to son.

In the hands of the wise woman health is a holistic, multi-dimensional state of being, an interplay between body, mind, and spirit, with cause and effect reaching far beyond the temporal world. The wise woman knows that it is our vital spirit and care of it that nurtures health and wellbeing. Health is fostered by inter relational wellness and harmony with our family/community and environment, and of course ourselves. There is much that can be done to keep spirit alive and embodied which does not involve allopathic medicine. In the wise ways we know that we are connected to the web of life and understand the transformative processes of renewal. Ritual and observing the natural thresholds of life aid us in healthy development and the ability to integrate evolving consciousness. In preparing for death we are freed into life.

Recent events have highlighted more than ever how we have given too much power to the medical establishments in matters of health… we have been indoctrinated to believe that our bodies are the property and responsibility of medical experts. It appeared as if we had no choice in the matter and for the most part, we didn’t think to question it. We accepted as part of normal life, the routine check-ups, the inoculations, the prescription medicines, and the surgical procedures. We accepted the diagnoses of our doctor gods as incontrovertible. We were intimidated by remote science clad language and the superior detachment of many health professionals (please note, I am not implying that all health professions are remote and detached, and neither am I implying that all medical procedures and allopathic medicine are bad).

At school we were, after a very crude fashion, taught sex education. Wooden phalluses and copulating primates explained nothing of the exquisite sensitivity and confusion in our budding sexuality and changing bodies. There was no initiation or rites of passage except for the often-destructive self-initiation we put ourselves and each other through. We died of humiliation and shame. And maybe it is that shame of our bodies and our lack of connection to them that led to the slow but sure dissociation which primed the way for the professionals to take over.

So out of touch did we become from our bodies that we did not know what foods to eat to keep us healthy, what herbs to use to heal, or what practices to adopt to promote physical and spiritual integration… none of this was taught at school and rarely by our poor indoctrinated parents.

We forgot that dancing and singing and star gazing and belly laughing and river swimming and campfires and praying and dying and being reborn and truth and integrity and emotional release and forgiveness and nights without light and the wild, wild spirit and the contractions that gives way to the birthing of great art and touching the void and stepping out of time and space and holy pain and the heartbreak that leads to God and the spirit messengers of illness and discovering our true name and the changing of the seasons and ceremony and the swirling of the cosmos and our part in it are some of the wisdom keys to unlocking good health.

As Hygeia and Luna conspire to shed light onto the processes of renewal, an invitation this lunar cycle through Aquarius is to reflect on how in or out of touch we are with our spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health. It is also an invitation to review how and where we have given ourselves away at the most fundamental level of being.

In claiming sovereignty of our physical bodies we also claim sovereignty for our lives and our Selves on the most profound level.

As mystic and liberated soul William Blake reminds us,

“Enlightenment means taking full responsibility for your life”.

Leo Full Moon: I am chaos. I am alive, and I tell you that you are free.

Windswept Eris by Art E Studio

The full moon in Leo on Thursday 28th January is dynamic to say the least and is likely to stir some rumblings in the collective underbelly. With a tight Venus/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn, and the Moon making a T-square with Mars and Uranus in Taurus, we may experience flaring hot tempers, emotional outbursts, and the breaking loose of hidden things from deep in the personal and collective unconscious. Information surfacing at this time may expose yet more tales of corruption and manipulation as well as unearthing our innermost desires and longings.

With a Uranus/ Mars/ Moon T-square, our desire could well be to shake off the shackles of control and authority that have bound us for close to a year. The overall compliance we have witnessed so far may now turn to indignation giving way to a louder voice of dissent. Primal urges and instincts stirring below the threshold of the conditioned mind may surface causing psychic unrest and greater disturbance in the collective field.

The full moon call is to be with the uncomfortable feeling allowing it to lead us to the supressed voice at our core, the one that has been silenced by fear and paralysis. As tensions give rise to expression we may be surprised by our own utterances and behaviour and that of others. If we can allow all assertions compassionate space in the midst of uncertainty we have a chance of moving closer to our authentic feelings. From there we are clearer in our chioces. And we do have chioces.

Uranus moon contacts are never comfortable, and especially with Uranus in Taurus, insecurity around material attachment, food and primal needs may dislodge us from any contrived sense of comfort we have grasped at during ‘these troubled times’. If we have allowed ourselves to be lured into a false sense of security now might the time to review those impressions.

Following on the theme of deep stirrings in feminine consciousness triggered by the new moon/ Pluto conjunction, and the grand square between Vesta, Neptune and the South Node on 13th January, the continued rise of feminine power is amplified by a strong Lilith/Eris signature in this full moon chart.

With asteroid Lilith making an exact conjunction to the Sun and Jupiter at 9 ° Aquarius, the dark feminine is casting a shadow on the solar enlightenment project and credibility of Homo scientificus’ plan for ordo ab chao (order out chaos) through bio medical manipulation and increasing social control.

Lilith, as usual, is asking some difficult questions…

She who knows the ineffable name of God is dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s in the book of natural law examining where man-made laws are in contravention. Eris is mixing things up and adding a little chaos to proceedings while boldly calling out any trangressions.

Both these winged apple bearing daimonia are compelling us to wise up.

Mean Black Moon Lilith joins forces with warrior god Mars at 10 ° Taurus, while True Black Moon Lilith and Eris, goddess of Discord, make a powerful alliance at 23 ° Aries… holy moly!

Not one but three manifestations of Lilith have flown in centre stage under the full moon spotlight. She comes in from the wild places, from exile, from beyond the reach of normal consciousness… weaver of inner and outer space. She bears the deep root of humanity, the World Tree, and the animus mundi and she is holding those who threaten it accountable.

Enter Eris…

Upsetter extraordinaire, Eris, formerly known as Xena, has been doggedly squaring Pluto through Capricorn in 2020, forming five squares, the stand-off continues within a 2-degree orb and an exact conjunction reoccurring on 27 August and 9 October 2021. Merged with True Black Moon Lilith this full moon, the pair create a mighty force of dark feminine energy that refuses to be silenced. Their influence is felt behind the scenes and in the subterranean caverns of Hades where deep transformative processes are currently at work.

With Venus also in the underworld this full moon, there may be a strong need to call forth our own exiled parts and rise up against injustice, transgressions, and hidden forces that seek to manipuate and subvert. This dark feminine presence is a call to undergo the necessary initiatory operations to reclaim our lost or stolen power, especially perhaps power that we have given in abundance to outside forces this year as many of us regressed to a state of fear induced confusion and passivity.

This applies to both women and men as a call to reclaim the abandoned parts of ourselves.

Perhaps it is becoming more difficult to ignore our inner knowing and cues guiding us to look deeper and recognizing what does not feel quite right. The reason the dark feminine has been persecuted and exiled is precisely due to her ability to see in the dark and call out all forms of corruption and manipulation.

Who is Eris?

In an article published in the Mountain Astrologer, Exploring the Meaning of the Dwarf Planet, Eris (Or Is It Really Xena?) Heather Ensworth says,

She heralds the return of the Sacred Feminine and the dissolution and transformation of our current patriarchal belief systems.  She encourages us to let go of our personal stories, to dive deep, and to return to right relationship with Source and with all life.”

Making parallels with Xena Warrior Princess, Ensworth continues to say,

She rebelled against authorities or laws that were not in alignment with what she felt was just and fair, which is also Aquarian.  As part of a modern myth, developed out of modern technology, Xena symbolizes many of the patterns characteristic of the Aquarian Age that we are moving into [Xena] followed her own path, guided by intuition and life experience, in attunement with her body and the natural world around her.  Her spirituality was an embodied one, not one of religious beliefs or dogma…. She represents a return to natural law.

Natural law includes chaos. It is unwise to believe that all perceived aberrations can be deleted from life processes. The goddess cannot be sanitised, quarantined, or dismembered into neat, classified packages… the goddess cannot be vaccinated. To attempt to live in a perfect, artificial world humans are also forced to become perfect and artificial… the dark goddess, guardian on the threshold prevents this from happening. It is Her job to preserve and protect a human/ divine multi- dimensional reality brimming with all aspects of human experience, dark and light, toward an authentic expression of the liberated human.

In the film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron, there is a scene where Harrison, newly recruited into a secret elite government is called to his superior’s office to discuss his (erratic) ideology test results. John Klaxon played by Christopher Plummer encourages Harrison to confess any issues he has about his new life and the establishment to which he now belongs. Harrison laments the end of great art, and while he realises that the constitution states all people must be equal, the price to pay saddens him. Klaxon shares the sentiment and while listening to Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto says how much it pains him that he is striving to create a world where another Beethoven will never be born, but that in order to erase humanity’s covetous nature, it has to be.

(Warning: disturbing scenes in this video clip)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW8LbadVvc4

Of course, what Klaxon does not include is the beauty and wonder of the human spirit, nor does he offer any deeper insight into forces at work in human genetics to trigger such violence.

Not that I am making parallels with contemporary government and Vonnegut’s secret elite, my point is to consider- through a work of fiction – one of the many potential endgames of a consciousness bent on totalitarianism. The further the pendulum swings in that direction the more archetypal forces such as Eris and Lilith manifest in the collective.

Natural law seeks to balance, and it is often in the chaos that new visions and consciousness expansion occurs.

I say unto you: one must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star. I say unto you: you still have chaos in yourselves.

So says Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche.

And Eris says in The Principia Discordia,

I am chaos. I am the substance from which your artists and scientists build rhythms. I am the spirit with which your children and clowns laugh in happy anarchy. I am chaos. I am alive, and I tell you that you are free.

Venus conjunct Regulus: Power of the majestic feminine.

La forza (“the force”) by Boris Indrikov

Every 8 years Venus meets with the royal star Regulus- heart of the lion.

If you get up just before sunrise on October 2 & 3, you may be able to see Regulus shining in the morning sky next to Venus (Venus is the brighter of the two).

While this event happens every 8 Earth years, during that time Venus has circled the Sun 13 times.

The union of Venus and Regulus announces the fierce feminine, the one who will not be tamed, silenced, or subdued beneath false authority. It is an energy that is resonant with the mighty Egyptian goddess Sekhmet whose name means ‘one who is powerful’ and who is also given many epithets such as ‘one before whom evil trembles’.

This is an opportunity to remember and reaffirm sacred patterns of feminine wisdom and strength as a force that will not tolerate oppression, corruption, or evil.

She is the one who rises again and again to defend the sacredness of life, freedom, sovereignty, and truth.

Perhaps you feel called to honour this force in yourself, align with ancient feminine power and shine your light through the murkiness, confusions, and illusions of this time… if you’re feeling particularly inspired or focused you might want to rise before the Sun to meet these celestial beauties within and without.

The exact conjunction happens on October 3 at 00:00 UTC.

Hymn of Sekhmet

Mine is a heart of carnelian, crimson as murder on a holy day.
Mine is a heart of corneal, the gnarled roots of a dogwood and the bursting of flowers.
I am the broken wax seal on my lover’s letters.
I am the phoenix, the fiery sun, consuming and resuming myself.
I pace the halls of the Duat.
I knock on the doors of death.
I wander into the fields to stare at the sun and lie in the grass, ripe as a fig.
The souls of the gods are with me.
They hum like flies in my ears.
I will what I will.
Mine is a heart of carnelian, blood red as the crest of a phoenix.

Venus & Vesta: The Language of Love

Illustration by Carlos Schwabe from la reve by emil zola

In yesterday’s full moon in Libra, Venus-the natural ruler of Libra-was at 3 degrees Gemini conjunct asteroid Vesta at 6 degrees Gemini. In the chart the moon lodge women were working with (London), Venus and Vesta were in the 4th house conjunct the IC at 27 degrees Taurus- also ruled by Venus.

An appropriate theme to explore then was Venus & Vesta & the language of love.

Tuning in from our respective homes each woman shared something about the home she currently found herself in for lock-down. For some not much had changed, for others the changes ranged from subtle to significant…I myself moved home just at the beginning of lock-down and so while the home I find myself in is lovely, it is unfamiliar.

Almost all of us had something to say about home. And for me personally with the Libra full moon exactly on my natal moon, I woke up yesterday with a peaceful feeling of being ‘homed’ in myself –  a good reminder that home is an inner experience as well as outer.

Venus as an archetype is deeply invested in home and environment- she loves beautiful surroundings, harmonious relationships, good friends, sensuality, and the pleasing things of life. A Venusian type person is thrilled when he or she is among the comforts of the body, the imagination, and the soul. But these pleasures are different for everyone, so we wondered… what is our language of love: what is home to us – who is home to us – and what do we need in order to feel loved, nourished and cared for? Also, how do we love… what is our love style?

This opens up the question of what was home like as a child? Was our budding Venus appreciated and encouraged by those around us or was it offensive and offended? And if she was not able to spread out in her full sensuous glory, can we do it differently now? Are we honouring our Venus?

With Venus in the 4th house issues of home, not only for ourselves, but for others are highlighted. What role are we taking during this unusually intense time at home? Is it more-or-less the same, or have we been asked to step up and care for an elderly parent, a sick partner, or- in the case of many mothers- is our mothering capacity near to breaking point?

Try to honour your Venusian needs- whatever they be- in whatever small ways you can.

Turning to Vesta- the keeper of the hearth and the eternal flame- she raises questions around what our sacred purpose is and what we need to be well enough to see it through. For me right now Vesta is about taking care of my body as well as I can and purifying myself of toxic influences. I’m sure I’m not alone in confessing to spending too much time on-line … even while I try to be mindful and limit it. With an 8th house Vesta placement I am also using this time to do some deep diving into the emotional reality of my relationships.

A daily practice I currently have is to cleanse my physical and subtle body using visualization techniques. None of us really know the effects of electromagnetic pollution and how it impacts the human body. One of the major concerns- and understandably so- at this time is the implementation of 5G, a controversial hot potato that as yet has no agreed upon consensus. It has been speculated (maybe proven) that EMF’s affect the water structure of the human system and other life forms, so good quality water and plenty of it along with visualizations to realign the integrity of our body’s structure is beneficial. As is being in nature as often as possible to discharge EMF pollution.

Above all Vesta is the sacred container through which spirit is expressed, she is the chalice that is able to receive, hold, and distribute spiritual light.

Together with Venus who ultimately embodies and expresses qualities such as grace, receptivity, and sensuality, this feminine duo in Gemini this lunar cycle is engaging our intellect to establish what we need to nurture ourselves and others over the next couple of weeks, and how to implement it. Venus and Vesta in Gemini connects mind-body-spirit.

If you feel drawn to explore how Venus & Vesta move in your life, I am available for on-line astrology consultations.

Virgo Supermoon: Chiron, Medusa & the Serpent Mysteries.

‘Eyes of Medusa’ by Andrea Mazzocc-Hetti

Full moon in Virgo, 9th March at 17.48 GMT.

Chiron conjunct Medusa at 4 degrees of Aries.

Medusa, serpent headed gorgon, monstrous cave dweller on the fringes of the western world… woe betide all who cross her path and catch a glimpse of her snaky unblinking eye. For if she cast her beady eye upon you, you will be turned to stone, forever frozen in her wasteland, a statue of the not quite living and the not quite dead. A tormented soul in stony limbo.

Chiron the centaur, son of Cronus and sea nymph Philyra, suffers his first wound as a baby when his mother upon seeing him is so appalled by his appearance that she rejects him at once.

Chiron is then adopted by Apollo who among other things tutors him in the healing arts.

Chiron’s second wound occurs when he is accidentally pierced by an arrow belonging to Hercules that is dripping with the blood of the Hydra, the many headed serpent whose blood causes a wound that can never heal.

In his suffering, Chiron finally renounces his immortality and swaps places with Prometheus the Titan god who steels fire from the gods to give to humanity. Chiron no longer a god, now a mortal being is thus redeemed from his eternal suffering.

When Chiron and Medusa join forces on the cosmic stage we can be sure that the deepest mysteries of healing and renewal are vibrating through the collective consciousness.

Chiron, half horse half human and Medusa, mortal gorgon with a head full of hissing snakes pulls us through the most heretical and forbidden wormholes to a gnostic understanding of human divinity and transcendence- punishable by death if not handled in right relationship to the gods.

So what might a meeting of these two awesome figures look like and what can it reveal about the available energies on this Virgo supermoon?

Chiron has taken the serpent’s poison into himself and in the process of attempting to transmute the poison he becomes a master healer. Finally renouncing his godly status he trades places with Prometheus, the renegade who steals fire (enlightenment) from the gods to give to humanity. Chiron’s gift therefore is to redeem humanity from darkness by sanctioning and enabling Prometheus’ act which is the gifting of divinity- knowledge of the gods- to humanity.

Chiron’s own journey, a deep diving into the serpent mysteries enables him to learn the secrets of transmutation. His knowledge is the understanding that snake poison can either kill or heal, and while he himself is the ultimate sacrifice, he gifts this gnosis to humanity- spiritual fire that can liberate from the chains of darkness.

Medusa is also a keeper of the serpent wisdom- once Perseus slays off her head, the droplets of blood that fall to the desert floor create life in the form of plants and flowers which shoot up all around. Athena gifts the blood of Medusa to Asclepius the god of healing, she presents this sacred substance in two vials, the blood in the left vial has the power to destroy while the blood in the right vial has the power to heal and even restore life from the clutches of death.

A meeting between Chiron and Medusa such as is happening under this full moon opens the door for us to consider the poison that we carry inside of us- does it destroy us, or can we learn to transmute the poison for our deepest healing? Can we learn the wisdom of “pharmakon” a Greek word that means both “medicine” and “poison”?

We can either let the poison fester inside until it renders us to a state of not quite living and not quite dead before it finally kills us, or like the snake with its regenerative powers of renewal and transformation we can shed our skin in a process of death and rebirth while holding within us the secrets of metamorphosis… and if divinely inspired share these teachings with others.

What is it in us that wants to be unfrozen under this new moon? What old skins are ready to come off? What wounds, hurts, and poisons are we willing to let go of?

To enter into this process we must accept that what we have previously considered to be our wounds, disabilities, paralysis, or limitations are in fact our potential gods. Once we release the energy currently being used to store the poison inside of us, the gateway through which we may find our greatest power opens before us.

The serpent mysteries are involved with integrating duality- to accept that there is light in darkness and there is darkness in light- it is the acceptance or acknowledgement of the shadow and the reclaiming of our energy- sometimes huge amounts of energy- that hold us in the past, frozen like the statues in Medusa’s wasteland.

Dark side of the moon, Lord of karma…and a sprinkling of grace

In my last blog I spoke about the healing opportunity that Dark Moon Lilith (22-degrees of Capricorn) conjunct Pluto (24-degrees of Capricorn) brings this new moon. I also highlighted the conjunction between Black Moon Lilith (1-degree of Aries), and Chiron (3-degrees of Aries).

In this blog-also about the February new moon- I want to focus on another powerful aspect: Saturn conjunct Chariklo at 27-degrees of Capricorn.

The stellium in Capricorn on Sunday 23 February looks like this-

Dark Moon Lilith 22 Capricorn

Pluto 24 Capricorn

Chariklo 27 Capricorn

Saturn 27 Capricorn

While Pluto Lord of the underworld (unconscious) has managed to catch wild wind spirit Lilith and taken her to his lair, Chariklo, the graceful spinner infuses the scene with a touch of feminine divinity and old man Saturn, Lord of karma over-sees the whole affair.

Quite a play on the cosmic stage as these powerful archetypal energies take their respective positions in the unveiling of the next lunar cycle.

Step forward Dark Moon Lilith-

In my previous blog I wrote about DML representing the exiled parts of us that have become split off from our core self. She is the rejected part of our feminine nature that can cause all sorts of havoc while she is unacknowledged and unintegrated. The wild one out beyond the bounds of civilised convention and social niceties, she terrorises the fantasies of men and refuses any form of submission.

Depending on where she is located in our natal chart DML can act out in any number of dangerous or ‘bad’ ways causing destruction to ourselves and those around us- or it may be where we carry the collective or family shadow or are scapegoated in some way. Lilith in us is most noticeable to others in her Dark Moon aspect and they may see this in us even while we ourselves are blind.

As elusive and untameable as she is DML is no match for Pluto- for no one, not even the most ardent renegade can escape his deathly clutches. Erupting through the barren crust of Lilith’s playground-a desert somewhere out beyond the Red Sea- he has abducted Lilith and taken her to Hades for a thorough stripping and alchemical cooking in the fires of the underworld.

Sinking down through the layers of the psyche Pluto shines a light on the dark side of the moon exposing all that has previously been hidden. This may reveal why Lilith has been raging for so long. “What ails thee dark queen?”.

Let me just say at this point- to imagine that Lilith is going to be appeased or pacified by a positive affirmation or week long forgiveness retreat is foolish and unwise- no amount of new age tricks and by-passing will allay her desolation, no amount of psychotherapeutic rationalism will explain her torment, and forgiveness is futile while the flames of her rage rip through the white-washed buildings of patriarchy.

Dark Moon Lilith is the receptacle of millennia of abuse against the feminine. Someone said it best when she said- “You can’t keep the goddess in the basement for thousands of years with duck-tape over her mouth and expect her to be smiling when she is released. Right! Nor should we expect her to be wearing Max Factor lipstick or sport a nice hairdo. Indeed, she’s not going to be in the least bit civilised. Similarly, if and when Lilith gives up her wilderness abode and crosses the boundary back into Civyy street, she’s unlikely to uphold any codes of moral conduct or etiquette imposed to enable a safe life of denial- for Lilith more than anything demands authenticity.

When someone begins to integrate their Dark Moon Lilith, the nice, pleasing person you thought you knew and loved may cast off her coat of chain mail and liberate herself into the naked truth. As the links of oppression and denial clink to the floor one by one, depending on where you are on your own Lilith journey (radical authenticity) you might turn for the hills and run. But Lilith has so much to show us if we can stand the heat. Lilith is in fact the guardian of our heart for once she is liberated, all that has previously obscured and blocked our connection to our heart (our wounds) falls away and there is nothing left but truth- and maybe in the end the only truth is love.

I am sure everyone has a Lilith story to greater or lesser degrees- and this is probably the degree to which the ‘Lilith Lines’ run through our tribal and family histories, expressed as ancestral or inter-generational trauma.

In the realm of Lilith, we are not only dealing with our own personal story of rejection, scapegoating, denial, or abuse, it is the point where we tap into the whole story of corruption of the feminine… it’s going to hurt.

Exposing and facing the wound of Lilith is not easy and because of this she continues to be locked in exile from one generation to another until finally someone in the family field is able to witness and release her.

But beneath Lilith’s rage and demonic ways is a soft and very vulnerable part that has never felt safe enough to show herself.

Pluto conjunct Dark Moon Lilith opens a gateway into these depths, though I would say if this is the journey you are currently on it would be wise to find some good and trustworthy support for yourself.

And…fear not…there is a point of redemption!

Chariklo, the female centaur and wife of Chiron offers her healing balm at this time. Exactly conjunct Saturn at 27-degrees Capricorn, and so also conjunct Pluto and DML, Chariklo brings a higher perspective of the painful human dynamics we find, or have found, ourselves in.

When we can raise ourselves above the never-ending drama of our lives to see the bigger picture and free ourselves from the conditioning and self-sabotaging beliefs we inherited or have carried forward, we may see that every difficult relationship, or dysfunctional behaviour facilitated our break-through from the imprisonment of the mind.

Like her husband Chiron, Chariklo shows us that what we previously considered as our wounds or curses are in the end a gift- and what Chariklo ultimately offers is the gift of love.

Fortunately, Chariklo stays close to both Pluto and Saturn through the conjunction right up until 2022. This really is a blessing- tuning into the qualities of Chariklo might just save us from suffocating in the chasms of duality- right/wrong, good/evil which leads to further separation and illusion. Forgiveness is needed but forgiveness can’t just be magicked into existence with a course in CBT- these roots run deep.

And what of Saturn taking account of all this melodrama? For me his role in this is two-fold:

First, he insists on asking us to account for how all of this translates in the real world- the here and now, and the day-to day reality of our existence. He may be asking us to create strong boundaries, to call time on a particular relationship, to finally set in motion the concrete things needed to execute a plan, or he may confront us with our human limitations.

On the other hand, issues of karma may be surfacing at this time as we contemplate why we find ourselves in the same situations over and over again. Why do we keep on attracting the same dynamics in our relationships, financial situations, health?

Karmic relationships have a way of appearing in our life to help us re-connect our relationship to ourselves and to Source. They show us how to untangle from toxic and damaging behaviours that keep us split off and disconnected… just like Lilith in the wilds.

Ultimately, it is never about the other person- we are but actors in each other’s play, holding up the mirror and showing, sometimes through the most unendurable pain, where we have turned our back on God- or Goddess- or any other term for the ineffable mystery that we may just glimpse on surrendering our need to be right, or to know, or to always be in control.

In a way Dark Moon Lilith is the place of unrelenting control that will stop at nothing before total destruction…  if she remains unacknowledged.

Oh, but that’s a tough step- it’s really hard to accept the shadow in oneself. Really, we would much rather show ourselves as competent, in control, sophisticated and light filled beings- no one wants the mess. But let’s face it, don’t we keep spilling the mess into our lives anyway, leaving to varying degrees trail of destruction- whether that be on the personal or collective level?

This is where the relationship between Lilith and Saturn is important- until we heal our deepest wounds, we will naturally keep on manifesting them in order to finally understand them.

Freeing Lilith

February’s new moon occurring on Sunday 23 February at 15.32 GMT has the potential to unlock the door to hidden, repressed or exiled parts of our individual psyche, and in the collective unconscious.

Our banished parts will not lay dormant or be silenced forever and in spite of our best efforts to repress them, like hardy weeds, eventually they poke up through the concrete, straining toward the life-giving properties of the sun (consciousness). And while the weed killers on offer in our current culture may be strong and seductive, they can never fully eclipse the soul’s desire for wholeness.

While the banished parts of us demand to be acknowledged and integrated, like a good family constellation everything and everyone must be included in the bigger picture- for the story is only half told without all the factors.

But we keep trying to lock up the more problematic parts of ourselves in the basement, to not talk about them, to destroy the evidence and use any number of tactics to stay in control. Often the ego will stop at nothing to this end. This is not possible with Lilith. She refuses to collude with any subterfuge of ours, or anybody else’s making. She systematically closes off all avenues that lead to the false self. She persistently shows us the pathways to authenticity even while it hurts and at times it may feel that we are becoming lost in the wilderness. And even while old memories from past lives burn brightly in our unconscious, still she insists on our liberation from any form of imprisonment.

This process is happening on an individual level but it is also happening in the collective, and this new moon offers extra facilitation if we are willing to get real with ourselves.

Freeing Lilith is an inside job, no one is going to give us permission.

Here are the new moon aspects:

Chiron at 3 Aries conjunct Black Moon Lilith (true) at 1 Aries

Dark Moon Lilith at 22 Capricorn conjunct Pluto at 24 Capricorn

What do you get when you cross Lilith with Pluto and Chiron? Deep transformational healing and a chance to own our rejected parts.

In astrology charts I think of the triple placements of Lilith as one process with three stages

  1. Asteroid Lilith is the only physical body of Lilith. I feel it represents our original feminine essence before the abandoned parts of ourselves that were deemed unacceptable were sent into exile. Note this is often where we are powerful and therefore threatening.
  2. Dark Moon Lilith or Waldemath is the expression of the exiled and rejected parts  now split off from our core self and acting out in destructive and unintegrated ‘Lilith-like’ ways. Depending on where we have that point in our chart will describe the ways we are likely to act out or be projected on (it is also the place where we may be scapegoated by others- or asked to carry the collective shadow). In all likelihood we are already acting out that shadow through our own unconscious wounding and defensive behaviour. Dark Moon Lilith in our lives can manifest in many ways such as angry, cold, bitchy, promiscuous, self-destructive, violent, addictive, chaotic, unstable. The danger here is being trapped in a perpetual expression of a destructive and unintegrated Lilith so that we come to believe that is who we are or that we are irreparably damaged.
  3. Black Moon Lilith is the point of redemption and healing through which we may heal our Lilith wound and reclaim the exiled parts of ourselves. This is a deeply visceral process in which we literally release trapped or frozen aspects of our psyche and reintegrate them into the wholeness of our being. It is not that we return to our original feminine essence, it is more that we experience a renaissance of feminine consciousness based on the Lilith journey that have taken. This is nothing short of a rebirth of the divine feminine.

Black Moon Lilith conjunct Chiron in Aries-

This placement can facilitate deep soul healing. Chiron is the wounded healer while Lilith is the exiled and repressed parts of ourselves that need to be brought back into consciousness by releasing blocked and repressed energy stuck in our tissue, cells and psyche. Both Chiron and Black Moon Lilith operate on the level of instinct.

During this conjunction it is a good time to find the methods, modalities and people who have the know-how, wisdom, or vibration that can help us release stagnant energy. Body work, cranio- sacral therapy, breathwork and any other modality that works with the body/mind connection is good, as is shamanic practices such as soul retrieval.

Given that this placement in Aries methods that are dynamic and work on the level of instinctual awareness and/or the active principle is going to be effective. Energetic dancing, shaking, trance dance, any of these practices are beneficial at this time.

Dark Moon Lilith Conjunct Pluto in Capricorn-

To heal our Dark Moon Lilith we first of all have to become aware of Her. Looking at the inner demoness is not always easy and sometimes we just plain refuse to see Her. But here’s a clue… if other people are projecting something of this dark feminine vibe onto you, you can be sure you carry a corresponding wound. The tricky thing about Dark Moon Lilith is that because we have been wounded, we often feel our behaviour is justified in protecting ourselves form further wounding. Ultimately though this is self-sabotaging because not only does it harm those around us, it also cuts off our potential for fulfilling, healthy and intimate relationships. This only serves to reinforce our feelings of rejection and alienation. Dark Moon Lilith has a resonance with Medusa, the serpent headed gorgon who has the anti-gift of turning others to stone just by her gaze.

With Pluto and DML we may be taken right down into the depths of our soul to understand what has happened and why we are so hurt. Lord of the underworld- the great transformer- can shine a light on even the darkest recesses if we are willing to make the descent and face our demons.

Dream journaling, art, automatic writing are all good tools to connect with the unconscious this dark moon- and any dark moon time.

Individually our soul is pulling down the veil while collectively we are being asked to challenge the safe illusions that we have created in order to protect ourselves from the painful truth of our behaviours.

Together, Lilith, Chiron and Pluto offer a hand in leading us to painful but ultimately redemptive places.

Hunter & The Hunted: Dejanira & Nessus

The Rape of Dejanira- Guido Reni

February’s full moon in Leo occurring at 07.33 GMT opens a gateway into a theme which is constantly discussed and often misunderstood –  the dynamics of the abused and the abuser.

This may seem like a surprising comment given that our social media and psycho-spiritual channels are currently saturated with information on how to identify and over-come toxic and damaging ways of relating. Particularly in the field of personality disorders, NPD, or narcissistic personality disorder has claimed the hotspot in being the new evil incarnate. Podcasts, YouTube videos, talks, seminars, books and films readily expose and condemn the diabolical indicators of that new breed of human- the ‘Narc’.

But it’s not only NPD that is being exposed in an attempt to better understand the inner workings of abusive relationships, and as one thing can’t exist without the other, it becomes apparent that there can be no abuser without a victim to abuse. Co-dependents, sufferers of PTSD, border-liners, empaths, and an array of increasingly complex personality disordered behaviour comes under the sway of psychotherapy in an attempt to understand why we humans are so challenged and dysfunctional in our intimate relating.

It’s little wonder that these matters-especially issues of abuser and perpetrator-should occupy much of our interest these days, after all we are under a Saturn Pluto conjunction which in itself is undoubtedly bringing issues of power, abuse of power, and the exposure of hidden things to the surface.

But under this full moon we also have the added intensity of asteroid Nessus exactly conjunct asteroid Dejanira at 9 degrees of Pisces.

Let me explain…

In Greek mythology Dejanira who was a Calydonian princess and whose name translates as “man-destroyer” or “destroyer of her husband” has become synonymous in astrology with the victim archetype.

Here is her story-

One day Dejanira, the wife of Hercules, wanted to cross the river Euenos and was offered a lift by the centaur Nessus who invited her to hop on his back while her ferried her over the water. Dejanira, grateful for the offer accepts the invitation but halfway across the centaur attempts to rape her. The scene is witnessed by Hercules who standing on the opposite riverbank promptly raises his bow and shoots Nessus with a poisonous arrow. Before his imminent death Nessus tricks Dejanira by exploiting her worst fears and deepest insecurities, namely the infidelities of her husband which may eventually lead to her abandonment.

The cunning Nessus draws Dejanira into a ruse that enables him to inflict revenge on his adversary Hercules from beyond the grave. He offers Dejanira a sample of his blood telling her that if she ever fears abandonment by Hercules, she should smear the blood on him thus ensuring his fidelity and lasting commitment.

When Hercules-who was well known for fathering children all over Greece- falls in love with Iola, it is more than Dejanira can bear, and desperately fearing abandonment she places a little of the centaur’s poisonous blood on her husband’s famous lion-skin shirt causing his skin to burn instantly. In great pain Hercules jumps into a nearby funeral pyre, and stricken with grief Dejanira takes her own life shortly after. A tragic tale indeed!

In astrology, the position of Dejanira indicates our susceptibility to abuse or the places we feel vulnerable to abuse. Nessus points to our potential abusive or predatory tendencies. In synastry charts where couples have these asteroids in hard aspect issues of abuse and sometimes dangerous liaisons, are highlighted- although this is not always the case and layers of complexity refuse any forgone conclusions.

Clues to the complexity of this duo are to be found in the myth itself. Firstly, why is Dejanira so riddled with insecurity to begin with? While it is clear that she has married a philandering husband, what is not clear is what drives her- a princess- into a situation where she is repeatedly disrespected.

And what of Nessus’s revenge from beyond the grave? This speaks of legacies, feuds, and unresolved issues passed down through lifetimes. There is no redemption in this story, everyone ends up dead. But at least then there is a sense that the feud, or curse, or bad blood has finally come to an end.

In her desperate love of her husband, Dejanira’s fears are more than realised in the demise of both of them.

Astrologer Melanie Reinhart relates Nessus issues to sexuality, death, revenge and jealousy, and says that it has to with abuse of power and has ancestral implications.

But Nessus also offers the possibility of reprieve and breaking of the toxic ties for good. As Melanie says of Nessus, ‘the buck stops here’.

“It seems that Nessus brings opportunities to understand and release deep patterns of helplessness, being taken advantage of, and being oppressed. Nessus processes really do seem to end the unfathomable ties that bind us to people, places, and situations.”

First though we have to understand how these processes operate in our lives. Have you ever found yourself at the end, or in the middle of an intensely difficult relationship scouring books and the internet for information in a desperate attempt to understand what the hell is going on, only to find yourself staring in the mirror wondering if you are the abused or the abuser? And if we accept that we have unwittingly got ourselves involved with (yet another) narcissist, or psychopath, or crazy lady does it not necessitate a deep probing into our own core wounding to ask why we would allow that? Afterall, emotionally healthy people do not invite nor stay in unhealthy relationships.

And in touching our core wounds and travelling back through our psychic timeline can we see where the pattern began, the place where the psychic fingerprints of our father or mother, and their father and mother left marks on our fledgling soul? And then further back down the ancestral line can we identify the patterns of abuse, or unlove, or hidden things whose shadow grows bigger with each generation that refuses to acknowledge it… until the buck stops here- with you.

But this is no small feat and overcoming intergenerational trauma requires more than just personal will and cognitive understanding. Healing wounds of the soul requires spiritual grace, love, forgiveness and compassion- centauress Chariklo can point us in this direction.

African writer and healer Patrice Malidoma say that what we think of as a curse is really the legacy of unlove. What curses live in the rivers of our families’ crossing from lifetime to lifetime? What betrayals wait in the inner sanctums of our homes? And where did it all begin?

These are sacred wounds, they are ours and yet they are not only ours, they belong also to our ancestors as they belong to our culture and societies.

The myth of Dejanira provides an archetypal lens through which we can explore issues of the abused and the abuser. It is too easy to blame the other. Often we form relationships with those souls who are precisely able to draw stagnant waters form our deepest well.

Like in the myth of Dejanira these poisons are carried in the blood from generation to generation until someone, usually after a great deal of trauma, decides to confront the family skeletons and clears the ancestral field.

Often the kind of relationships that are able to facilitate this holy healing are in the end just too difficult to sustain, though hopefully along the way we bring each other closer to a state of grace where we can finally let go of blame and the ultimately unrealistic polarity of abuser and abused.

Looking at the placements of Dejanira and Nessus in your own chart-and if you have them the charts of your parents- is hugely beneficial in identifying the family curse.

Dejanira’s killing of her husband is unmeditated and accidental but it is from her own deep wounds and insecurities that she destroys her husband and herself.

As I’ve been writing this blog a song from the 80’s has been rolling around in my head- Hunter and the Hunted by Simple Minds-
